What you'll do:
Find and read the error
Fix a sizing error
Fix a quantity error
Fix an EAN or ISBN error
Fix a category error
Fix a counterfeit items policy error
Fix a knives or bladed items error
Fix an immediate payment error
Re-export the listing
Find and read the error
You can spot an item stuck on export failed from your Items table, from inside the item itself, or from its Merchandising Strategy tab.
Where the error shows
Go to your Items table.
Open Filters, then filter by Status: export failed. This shows every item that failed to export, each with a red export failed pill in the eBay Status column.
Click into an item. A red ! icon next to the eBay tab name means there's an export error to look at, and the Merchandising Strategy panel on the eBay tab shows "A strategy step has failed - fix any errors then rerun the current steps to export the listing."
Read the exact error
Where you find the full error message depends on what kind of check failed.
For item-level checks (like sizing, barcodes, jewellery category, or knives), scroll to the QC Violations panel on the eBay tab, under History. Click More Details... to see the exact reason.
For pricing and strategy checks (like quantity or immediate payment), go to the item's Merchandising Strategy tab. Find the row with Result: Failed, and click into it to open Strategy Step Detail, which shows the exact error message.
Fix a sizing error
eBay has changed how it accepts the Size item specific, the Size field attached to a listing, across Apparel & Footwear categories, and this applies to any item with a Size field, in any category, not just clothing. eBay now only accepts the Size item specific from its own approved list of values, which includes:
Alpha sizing: 2XS, XS, S, M, L, XL, and so on
Numeric sizing: 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, and so on
Kids' sizing: standard age ranges such as 2-3 Years, 3-4 Years, 4-5 Years, up to 15-16 Years
One Size
The Size value must exactly match one of eBay's approved options — a country prefix, extra wording, or an unsupported range won't be accepted. For example, "UK 12" needs to become "12", "Small" needs to become "S", and "UK age 3-4" needs to become "3-4 Years". A combined size like "40-41" won't be accepted unless 40-41 is itself one of eBay's available Size options for that item.
Update the Size value
On the eBay tab, scroll down to the Required Item Specifics section and find the Size field.
Click the field to open the dropdown.
Select a value from eBay's standard list (for example, XS, S, M, L, or XL) — you can no longer type a custom value here.
Scroll to the bottom and click Save.
Click Re-run Current Steps.
Handle items with more than one size
Some items - like a co-ord set with a UK10 top and a UK6 skirt, don't fit neatly into a single Size value. In this case, select whichever size is most relevant to the listing, and add the other piece's size to the item's description so buyers still have both.
Fix a quantity error
If the Merchandising Strategy tab shows "Invalid input quantity: . Must be a non-negative integer.", the item's Quantity field is empty or invalid.
Go to the item's Item Details tab.
Find the Quantity field.
Enter a valid whole number (for example, 1).
Click Save.
Click Re-run Current Steps.
Fix an EAN or ISBN error
If the error says something like 'EAN has an invalid value of "5059434642769".' or 'ISBN has an invalid value of "9780241276244".', eBay has rejected the barcode or ISBN entered for the item. EAN and ISBN errors are fixed the same way.
On the item, find the EAN or ISBN field (in the item's description or specifics area).
Clear the existing value.
Enter N/A.
Click Save.
Click Re-run Current Steps.
Fix a category error
If the error says something like "It appears your main stone is a cubic zirconia or other simulated gemstone. To be listed in the Fine Jewellery category, both the metal and main stone must be made from fine materials. Please list this item in the Fashion Jewellery category.", the item is listed under Fine Jewellery but its main stone isn't a fine material, so eBay wants it moved to Fashion Jewellery (Costume Jewellery) instead.
On the item's eBay tab, click Rescan with amendments (either the button at the bottom of the tab, or from the ⋮ menu in the top right).
Type a keyword (for example, "jewellery") into the search box and click Search.
From the results, choose the Costume Jewellery version of the category rather than the Fine Jewellery version (for example, Jewellery & Watches > Costume Jewellery > Necklaces & Pendants).
Click Save in the dialogue.
Back on the eBay tab, fill in any new required field that appears for the new category (for example, Type).
Click Approve.
Click Re-run Current Steps.
Fix a counterfeit items policy error
If the error says "This listing has been removed for violating Counterfeit items policy.", eBay has determined the item can't be listed at all — there's no fix to make and re-export.
This stops the strategy from continuing to retry the export. The item won't be relisted on eBay.
Fix a knives or bladed items error
If the error says "In the UK, bladed items can be sold and delivered only to customers aged 18 or older, so you need to select a delivery service with age verification and remove all others, including collection in person.", the item's postage policy doesn't include age-verified delivery.
Go to the item's Item Details tab.
Open the Postage Policy dropdown.
Select the age-verified option (for example, Postage Policy Knives & Cutlery). This replaces any other postage options, including collection in person.
Click Save.
Click Re-run Current Steps.
Fix an immediate payment error
If the error says "To require immediate payment, you must specify a Buy it now price.", the listing's payment policy requires immediate payment, but the listing doesn't have a Buy It Now price. This is fixed on eBay directly, not in Listing Monster.
On eBay, open Business Policies, open the payment policy used for the listing (shown against the item under Item Details > Payment Policy in Listing Monster, for example "Auction Payment Policy").
Click Edit payment policy.
Under Payment methods managed by eBay, untick Require immediate payment when buyer uses Buy it now.
Click Save.
Re-export the listing
Saving your fix doesn't re-export the listing on its own — for most error types, you need to trigger the export again.
Re-run the current steps
Once your fix is saved, this should push the listing through.
On the eBay tab, find the Merchandising Strategy panel on the right, showing "A strategy step has failed - fix any errors then rerun the current steps to export the listing."
Click Re-run Current Steps.
This starts the export attempt again using your corrected value.
Re-assign the strategy instead
🎥 Prefer to watch instead?
If the item still shows export failed after re-running the current steps, it likely failed at an earlier stage of its merchandising strategy. A merchandising strategy is the set of pricing and listing steps Listing Monster runs for an item over time. In that case, re-assign the strategy instead of re-running it.
Click into the item and go to the Merchandising Strategy tab.
Click the ⋮ (three dots) icon in the top right.
Click Re-assign Strategy.
Expected result
✅ Once the export succeeds, the red ! clears from the eBay tab and the error disappears from QC Violations or the Merchandising Strategy table. Your item's status in the Items table updates from export failed to its next status (such as Active or Scheduled), confirming it's back on eBay. The counterfeit items error is the exception — ending its strategy removes it from the export failed queue rather than relisting it.
💡 Tips and best practice
Filter your Items table by Status: export failed regularly, so errors don't sit unnoticed.
For barcode fields without a valid EAN or ISBN, use N/A rather than leaving the field blank or guessing a number.
For jewellery, check whether the main stone is a fine material before listing — it decides whether the item belongs in Fine Jewellery or Costume Jewellery.
Payment and postage policies are managed on eBay directly. Listing Monster only lets you choose which existing policy to apply to a listing.
Try Re-run Current Steps first, since it's quicker — only use Re-assign Strategy if that doesn't clear the error.
⚠️ Troubleshooting / FAQs
My item is a set with two different sizes — which one do I pick?
Select whichever size is most relevant to the listing, and add the other piece's size to the item's description. eBay's Size field only accepts one value, so the description is where the second size lives.
I re-ran the current steps, but it still shows export failed
Re-assign the strategy instead. This usually means the item failed at an earlier stage of its merchandising strategy, and Re-run Current Steps alone won't push past that — use Re-assign Strategy from the ⋮ menu on the Merchandising Strategy tab.
Why can't I type a custom size anymore?
eBay only accepts sizes from its own approved list now, so the Size field is a dropdown rather than free text. Since August 2026, eBay also blocks listings with missing or non-standard sizes at the point of listing, so it's worth picking from eBay's standard list on new items too, not just when fixing an export failure.
Why does eBay say my quantity is invalid?
The Quantity field on the item's Item Details tab is empty or contains something other than a whole number. Enter a valid whole number, such as 1, and save.
Why can't I enter a barcode for this item?
If the item doesn't have a valid EAN or ISBN, don't guess a number - clear the field and enter N/A instead.
Why is eBay saying my jewellery is in the wrong category?
eBay only allows the Fine Jewellery category for items where both the metal and the main stone are fine materials. If the main stone is a cubic zirconia or other simulated gemstone, move the listing to the Costume Jewellery (Fashion Jewellery) category instead.
Can I still sell an item flagged for the Counterfeit items policy?
No - eBay has removed the listing, and it can't be relisted. End the item's merchandising strategy so it stops retrying the export.
Why do I need to change my postage policy for a knife or bladed item?
UK law only allows bladed items to be sold and delivered to customers aged 18 or older, so eBay requires a delivery service with age verification and blocks collection in person. Selecting the knives and cutlery postage policy applies that automatically.
Why does eBay want a Buy It Now price?
Your payment policy has Require immediate payment when buyer uses Buy it now turned on, but the listing doesn't have a Buy It Now price. Fix this on eBay by editing the payment policy and unticking that option, or by adding a Buy It Now price to the listing.
Is this only affecting clothing, or all my eBay listings?
These errors can affect any eBay listing, in any category — not just clothing or fashion items. Check the exact wording of the error in QC Violations or the Merchandising Strategy tab to see which fix applies.
